Politics In The Pulpit

Harris

Now it is time to deal with one of the most sacred of cows: politics in the pulpit. It’s high time this sacred cow was made into hamburger. Now first of all, let me be clear: I do not believe in political rallies, gatherings and such at any church. The house of God is not for such inventions of man. That includes a lot of other gatherings that take place under some steeples. There are plenty of other places to take of necessary business in the community or town. Politics, in this setting has no place in the church.

However, this don’t mean the preacher can’t address issues of politics that affect decency, morality and the family and other such related areas. If any politician runnin’ for or holding office is a scoundrel who lives, supports and speaks for ungodliness, then the preacher should take aim and fire with a full load, whether Democrat, Republican or whatever label is on the can. Politics is not the issue in this case. And if some of those rapscallions called politicians try to legislate their ungodly ways down the throats of we the people, then calling a scoundrel a scoundrel and calling a communist a communist is in order.

Some preachers are afraid to speak the truth because they have been beat down by some powerhouse in the church who will cry foul if the preacher dares to tell folks they should support righteousness at the polls. If the preacher doesn’t do it, then no one will. Most preachers stopped crying aloud against sin and corruption in society and politics long ago and you will note that no one else has taken up the mantle. Also take note of the shape we are in today.

Party has nothing to do with how a Christian should vote. Principle is supposed to be the guiding light. I once had an old carnal church member tell me he was a democrat because his Daddy was a democrat. What foolishness! He turned red and got so mad he could pop when I told him it was a good thing his Daddy hadn’t been a drunk or he would be in trouble.

The answer to our problems in life is not government, but God. We should spend more time tending to the things of God than anything else, but that doesn’t do away with our obligation to speak up and vote when the time comes. So vote right. If folks would start checking out their local candidate as close as they do when calling the preacher, then things might start looking up the day after the election.
